A long time ago, it was called <strong data-start=\"238\" data-end=\"252\">Heliopolis<\/strong>, which means &#8220;City of the Sun.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"121\" data-end=\"284\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/pw\/AP1GczMGEWtv72WjrD6xN_Kf0d9YTCU9DJ9f3QaH87aGIkmHt8r8SjEMX-s5eYZrCWc1I0UmvyUXbxNLZzXYxjuh_6iK0gutZUKVZev1ORfFAy3FCTI8BPVoaLtR2mxdskXowKMTefK-zJfDN-NQmJRcECt7Sw=w856-h642-s-no?authuser=0\" width=\"856\" height=\"642\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"286\" data-end=\"542\">The Romans built big temples there around <strong data-start=\"328\" data-end=\"347\">2,000 years ago <\/strong>to honor their gods like <strong data-start=\"374\" data-end=\"385\">Jupiter<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"387\" data-end=\"398\">Bacchus<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"404\" data-end=\"413\">Venus<\/strong>. The temples were made with giant stones and amazing designs. Even today, people are surprised by how large and strong they are.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"286\" data-end=\"542\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/pw\/AP1GczODqxkc-BSpIWATomRzvhGeTUcvlaVlsHQwGxLZs-1o5a9GffPasVEvwLv3Pby2HuvRB-KJP-uTj450VYeXFRiEITygcTc4qfG9T46iaeti4ouPeHOScHHEn75XbWkxfFcYS25vjHc-m3-Zuc7XhZU58w=w856-h642-s-no?authuser=0\" width=\"856\" height=\"642\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"544\" data-end=\"771\">Baalbek was later damaged by <strong data-start=\"573\" data-end=\"588\">earthquakes<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"590\" data-end=\"598\">wars<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"604\" data-end=\"612\">time<\/strong>, but many parts of the temples are still standing. Over many years, it was <strong data-start=\"869\" data-end=\"895\">damaged by earthquakes<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"897\" data-end=\"910\">invasions<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"916\" data-end=\"927\">neglect<\/strong>.
