How to fix Skype crash;

Aasim Naseem, May 26, 2011 | Read Count: 14,461April 7, 2025
Category: My Tutorials > Random Tips

This afternoon, my skype on mac suddenly crashed when one of my friend make call; And after that several attempts failed to relaunched it;

Might be mac users were blocked by microsoft who bought the skype recently;

Well I din’t find the reason for this problem yet one of my friend shared the solution to get ride of this issue;

To fix Skype, delete shared.xml file from Skype data folder.

  • Win XP: C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Skype
  • For Mac OS: rm ~/Library/Application\ Support/Skype/shared.xml (just copy past this line in terminal and hit enter)
  • Win 7: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Skype
  • For Linux /home/YourLinuxUserName/.Skype

Restart Skype.

Noman, my friend;  Thanks bro for helping us for this solution;

Remember: The Skype folder is a hidden folder – please check Show hidden files in your file browser to view and access it.

Stay Happy;

        Hi,
        I have a question.
        If the fix is so easy, (which it is) why do you think SKYPE hasn’t sent out a fix?

      1. open your Finder;
      2. move to your master disk;
      3. here you will find Application Directory;
      4. Open application directory and find Utilities directory inside;
      4. Inside Utilities you will have Terminal application; Open it by double click;
      5. copy paste following line;
      rm ~/Library/Application\ Support/Skype/shared.xml
      6. Restart skype;
      7. Thumbs Up with smile;

    I can’t seem to fix it. I go into my applications folder, find the utilities folder, find terminal and I copied and pasted the the following in the terminal folder. I then closed out and tried restarting Skype. It didn’t work. I rechecked the terminal folder and what I pasted inside is no longer there.

    Window 7 / Skype 5.5 user. I was facing same issue of deleting the C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Skype folder and after doing so, the folder would re-appear causing same problem of shutting down. Not sure how I did it, or how I found it, but I found a tab under my name and or names of skpe friends in the skype folders that signified only ‘remote,’ I then deleted those folder. There were other names that also had ‘remote’ tabs that i deleted. Unfortunately, after deleting these folder, It losted some history and/or saved information, but my skype account was still valid. In other words, I did not have to re-register.

    Fortunately, I am Skyping again. I am so sorry I can’t explain how I did this.

    Also, FYI, I have an Hp Pavilion g series with the Skpe app already installed, I think this maybe the problem (already installed skype) some window 7 users such as ‘Joe, PP and GT are having… because my folder did not actually identify ‘roaming’ as Ans link described. I had to actually search for it (roaming) under names somehow/somewhere associated with skype. I hope this helps. I will go back and try and identify the steps I followed and post. Thanks so much Ans…you the MAN!!!!

    I had to actually nuke the entire folder under ~/Library/Appblahblah/Skype as it was still crashing on bootup for me. Specifically I moved the chat history plist file to a safe spot, nuked it all, ,then moved the chat history back. Based on the stack dump it seems i had somehow corrupted some data associated with window positions and it looks like skype wasnt sanity testing the data. (Im still using an older version of skype as I honestly cant stand the new big-window skype UI)

      Hi ..
      Thanks for writing to me; Well I suppose this issue has been resolved by subsequent updates and versions of Skype from Microsoft; As No one is reporting this issue for some time and it was believed that Microsoft has solved it; Playing with xml was a heck to “fix” it at our end; You can do registry clean of your system for any entry for Skype and then try to install new/updated version from official site; I pray and hope that you will be in good mood then; (:

      Let me know about your findings;

    For some reason, Terminal says that I don’t have a file called “shared.xml”, what could be the problem? :/

    I copy the line at the top for Mac OSX and paste it into terminal and it says that it could not reach the file because it did not have permission, I then opened up skype to see if anything happened and it crashed on startup again. Any help ans?

    Whenever i delete the XML Document file thing and I restart Skype, Skype turns off and the error comes up again. Then I go back onto the Skype file and the XML Document file is always back.

    I have Mac OS X 10.9.5 and Skype 6.19 and it crashes upon launch. Tried deleting shared.xml, but it reapears as some other users reported. Tried trashing all Skype files, even chat history and the software and re-installing and it still doesn’t work… Any other ideas? Thanks!

    Win 7 here, the error is NOT completely exposed (it finishes with “…”):

    cannot find …:users/#marcel/appdata/local/skype/apps/chatad…
    Your solution doesn’t work, any suggestion?
    Thanks
