Tomb of Emperor Jahangir – Shahdara, Pakistan

A peaceful resting place of a great Mughal emperor.

In the mid-November of 2014, I was heading towards the banks of the River Ravi in Lahore, where lies a beautiful and peaceful place — the Tomb of Emperor Jahangir. Jahangir was the fourth Mughal emperor, who ruled from 1605 to 1627. He was known for his love of art, nature, and justice.

After he died in 1627, his wife, Noor Jahan, who deeply loved him, chose this beautiful garden spot for his tomb. It was built in Shahdara, just outside Lahore, and took many years to complete.

Unlike other Mughal tombs with giant domes, Jahangir’s tomb is flat-roofed but full of beautiful artwork, colorful frescoes, and marble decorations. His grave is right in the center of the building, decorated with floral patterns and the Ninety-Nine Names of Allah written around it.

Here are some interesting facts about the Tomb of Emperor Jahangir

  • The tomb is made of red sandstone and marble.
  • It stands in the middle of a large Persian-style garden.
  • There used to be a bridge connecting it to the tomb of Asif Khan (Jahangir’s brother-in-law).
  • The area is part of a group of Mughal monuments called the Shahdara Complex.
  • It’s a peaceful spot loved by locals, tourists, and history lovers alike.

For me, the tomb is not just a grave — it’s a place full of history, Mughal art, love, and heritage. It reminds us of a time when emperors built with beauty and care.

Please see all the photos of my visit in the following album.
