PMP Exam Eligibility 2025: 3 Things You Need to Know

AasimNaseem, April 13, 2025May 6, 2026

This post talks about the PMP Exam Eligibility 2025 and everything else you should know. The Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification is a prestigious credential that validates your skills in leading and managing projects. As of 2025, the Project Management Institute (PMI) has specific eligibility criteria that candidates must meet to sit for the PMP exam. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of these requirements to help you assess your readiness and plan your certification journey.

Understanding PMP Exam Eligibility 2025 Requirements

PMI has established three primary sets of eligibility criteria based on your educational background and professional experience. Each set includes specific requirements for education, project management experience, and formal project management education or training.

Set A: PMP Exam Eligibility 2025 for Secondary Degree Holders

Requirements:

  • Education: High school diploma or an associate degree (or global equivalent).

  • Experience: A minimum of 60 months (5 years) of leading and managing projects within the past eight years.

  • Training: 35 hours of project management education/training or possession of a Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® certification.

Note: The 35-hour training requirement can be fulfilled through PMI Authorized On-Demand PMP Exam Prep or an Instructor-Led PMP course.

Set B: PMP Exam Eligibility 2025 for Four-Year Degree Holders

Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher (or global equivalent).

  • Experience: A minimum of 36 months (3 years) of leading and managing projects within the past eight years.

  • Training: 35 hours of project management education/training or possession of a Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® certification.

Note: The training requirement can also be met through PMI Authorized On-Demand PMP Exam Prep or an instructor-led PMP course.

Set C: PMP Exam Eligibility 2025 for GAC Accredited Program Graduates

Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor’s or postgraduate degree from a Global Accreditation Center (GAC) accredited program.

  • Experience: A minimum of 24 months (2 years) of leading and managing projects within the past eight years.

  • Training: 35 hours of project management education/training, which is typically fulfilled through GAC core project management coursework. This requirement is from Project Management Institute

Note: Graduates from GAC-accredited programs may have already satisfied the training requirement through their academic coursework.

PMP Exam Eligibility 2025: Key Points to Consider

  • Project Management Experience: The experience must be non-overlapping, professional project management experience accrued within the last eight years.

  • Formal Education: The 35 hours of project management education can be obtained through various training providers, including PMI Authorized Training Partners. Ensure that the course aligns with PMI’s standards and covers the necessary project management principles.

  • CAPM Certification: Holding a CAPM certification can substitute for the 35-hour project management education requirement, streamlining your path to PMP eligibility.

Steps to Apply for the PMP Exam 2025

  1. Review Eligibility Criteria: Assess your education and experience against the criteria outlined above to determine your eligibility.

  2. Gather Documentation: Prepare detailed records of your project management experience and education, including dates, hours, and specific project roles.

  3. Complete the Application: Submit your application through PMI’s online portal, providing all necessary documentation and information.

  4. Application Review: PMI will review your application to verify eligibility. This process typically takes 5–10 business days.

  5. Schedule the Exam: Upon approval, you’ll receive instructions to schedule your exam at a convenient time and location.

Preparing for the PMP Exam 2025

To enhance your chances of success:

  • Enroll in a PMP Exam Prep Course: Consider courses offered by PMI Authorized Training Partners to ensure the content aligns with the exam objectives.

  • Study the PMBOK® Guide: Familiarize yourself with the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), as it’s a primary reference for the exam.

  • Practice Exams: Utilize practice tests to assess your knowledge and identify areas needing improvement.

Achieving PMP certification is a significant milestone that can advance your project management career. By understanding and meeting the eligibility requirements—whether through your education, experience, or training—you set yourself up for success. Start by evaluating where you stand today, fill any gaps in your qualifications, and take a structured approach to preparation. With the right focus and commitment, earning your PMP in 2025 is well within reach.
