Ruins of the City Anjar – Lebanon AasimNaseem, October 17, 2022May 26, 2025 When the fire of ego and vanity between two princes is quenched by razing the lives and livelihoods of a 15-year-old city’s inhabitants, the remains are called The Ruins of the City #Anjar. I visited this city back in 2019 while on a business trip to Lebanon. I took a day off to visit the ancient places, especially Baalbek and Anjar. Anjar is a small city in Lebanon, famous for its old ruins. It was built in the early 700s by the Umayyad dynasty, one of the first Muslim empires. The city was planned in a Roman style, with streets, big gates, markets, and beautiful buildings. Anjar was made as a trading center, but it was never fully finished. After a short time, it was attacked and left in ruins. Today, only the broken parts of buildings, walls, and streets remain. Anjar was destroyed because it was attacked during a war. After it was built by the Umayyads in the early 700s, it became a target during a fight between the Umayyads and another group called the Abbasids. The Abbasids defeated the Umayyads and damaged the city. Because of this attack, Anjar was abandoned and left in ruins. People never rebuilt it, and only the broken buildings were left behind.
